The former Walgreens store at the corner of Acushnet Avenue and Tarkiln Hill Road in New Bedford has been vacant since closing on November 16, 2022, but the storefront won’t be empty much longer as a new tenant will soon occupy the space.
Dollar Tree is on its way to one of the city’s busiest intersections, the latest occupant of the building.
Originally a block of red-brick storefronts with office space above, Rite Aid purchased the property, demolished the buildings and built a store.
If memory serves, the block is where the original Fay’s was.
In 2017, Walgreens began acquiring more than 1,900 Rite Aid stores, including the one at Acushnet Avenue and Tarkiln Hill Road.
The Democrat and Chronicle reported at the time, “Walgreens Boots Alliance completed its $4.4 billion acquisition of 1,932 Rite Aid stores and three distribution centers in March (2018) after a failed 2015 bid to buy the chain outright.”
Rite Aid currently has stores at two locations in New Bedford, one at 1207 Acushnet Avenue and the other at 824 Purchase Street.
Walgreens has six locations in New Bedford: 838 Pleasant Street, 1103 Kempton Street, 2968 Acushnet Avenue, 1737 Acushnet Avenue, 1383 Cove Road and 858 Purchase Street.
There are currently three Dollar Tree locations in New Bedford, not to mention three Family Dollar stores and at least one Dollar General – but what’s one more, right?
I reached out to Dollar Tree corporate for an opening date for the new store, but no one got back to me. By the looks of things, it could be several more months before the new place opens.
Better start saving those dollars!
